Wolfgang Jerat (born February 9, 1955 in Cologne ; † July 10, 2020 in Ghana ) was a German football coach .

biography

Jerat grew up in Cologne-Kalk . As a player, he was active as a defender at various amateur clubs in and around Cologne. 1986 Jerat rose with the SSG Bergisch Gladbach 09 in the association league and ended his active season. Before that, after studying sports in Cologne, he had completed his soccer teacher training course in October. Jerat's first coaching position was the Tunisian first division club US Monastir . Jerat began his career as a coach of larger football clubs when he coached Wuppertaler SV from May 1990 to June 1992 and led them from the Oberliga to the 2nd Bundesliga .

In 1992 Jerat took over the 2nd team at 1. FC Cologne . There he became known throughout Germany when he replaced Jörg Berger as head coach at 1. FC Köln on February 28, 1993 . He looked after the club from the 20th to the 28th matchday. After only 7 points from 9 games (according to the 2-point rule) and a record of three won and five lost games as well as a draw, he was released from his job on April 28, 1993 and replaced by the Dane Morten Olsen as his Assistant he continued to work until his release in August 1995. In the 1996/97 season he trained again for Wuppertaler SV, but could no longer build on his earlier successes.

From 1997 to 2004 Jerat worked as a freelance scout. For example, at the 2002 World Cup for Denmark , he observed their opponents.

In the spring of 2004 he took over as coach of the North-Rhine upper division FC Junkersdorf . In spring 2007 Jerat took over training at Wuppertaler SV for the third time as the successor to Uwe Fuchs . Due to differences with the WSV management, he was given leave of absence on February 6, 2008 despite being at the top of the table and replaced by Wolfgang Frank .

For the 2008/09 season Jerat was introduced as the new head coach at Bonner SC in the new NRW League . He became champion with the club and rose to the fourth-class regional league . There he looked after the club in the 2009/10 season. But despite the secure relegation, the Bonner SC received no license for the 2010/2011 season, because the budget was not secured due to high debts; forced relegation followed. Due to the empty coffers, Jerat did not receive a new contract from the club. From November 29, 2011 he was coach at FC Prishtina , but in April 2012 he was released.

In November 2012 Jerat became the coach of FC Viktoria Köln . However, for health reasons, he quit his job at the end of January 2013.

Wolfgang Jerat died of a heart attack in July 2020 at the age of 65 in Ghana, where he was working at a football academy .

He left behind his son Tim , who was active as a professional football player, and a daughter.
