The Oberliga was or is the name of various leagues in numerous sports associations in Germany and Austria . Currently it is mostly a regional or subregional league in the middle levels of the league system . They are organized by the competent regional associations subordinate to the national sports association. In the territory of the GDR , the Oberliga was the highest game or competition class in which national championships were decided. Furthermore, there were some major leagues before 1933, which also represented the highest division in the German league system.

Germany

American football

In men's American football, the major league is on the fourth division level below the GFL , GFL 2 and the Regionalliga. The Oberliga is currently played in 6 seasons:

The champions of the major leagues usually rise directly to the higher-level season of the regional league. Exceptions to this are the champions of the Schleswig-Holstein-Liga, the Oberliga Hamburg and the Bremen-Liga, who play two promoted players to the Regionalliga together with the runner-up of the Oberliga Niedersachsen in a promotion round. In addition, the runner-up in the Oberliga Westfalen and the two season winners of the Bayernliga will be promoted directly to the regional league. Until 2010 the major leagues were organized by the regional associations. Before the Bundesliga was founded in 1966, the upper leagues were the highest German division.

With the 2013/14 season, the number of major leagues was reduced from 13 to nine, and from 2015/16 to eight. Since the new structure decided for 2014, where a 3rd Bundesliga is inserted, the Oberliga is no longer the fourth highest, but the fifth highest German division.

Austria

In men's ice hockey, the major league was located at the third highest division level below the Austrian ice hockey league and the national league until the 2010/11 season .
