The Oberliga Niederrhein (until 2008 Verbandsliga Niederrhein until 2012 Niederrhein League ) is the highest league in Football Verband Niederrhein and is currently the fifth-highest class in the German league system .

history

The league was founded in 1956 with 16 clubs as the highest league of the Lower Rhine Football Association . Previously, the national leagues that still exist today under the association league were the association's highest divisions. At the time of its introduction, the Niederrhein Association League was the third highest German football class. With the introduction of the Oberliga Nordrhein and the Regionalliga West / Südwest , the Verbandsliga Niederrhein became the fourth highest division in 1978 and the fifth highest division in 1994. In the course of the restructuring of the league system in Germany in 2008 and the associated introduction of the 3rd football league , it was only the sixth highest division from the 2008/09 season. The champions of the Niederrheinliga were directly qualified for the next higher NRW league . The last three teams were relegated to the three-track Lower Rhine regional league.

In the course of the regional league reform in 2012 , the sixth class association league level became the fifth class league again from the 2012/13 season. Together with the new Middle Rhine League and the reintroduced Oberliga Westfalen , the Oberliga Niederrhein has since formed the substructure for the geographically reduced Regional League West and thus partially replaced the disbanded NRW League.

Due to the reform, there were some changes in the 2011/12 season. The 13 best-placed clubs qualified directly for the fifth-class Oberliga Niederrhein, as did the champions of the three regional league seasons. The champion of the Lower Rhine League was able to qualify for the Regionalliga West in relegation games against one of the clubs of the NRW League placed in 4th to 7th place. This was achieved by FC Kray , which was able to prevail against the favored KFC Uerdingen and thus rose from the sixth to the fourth highest division. Due to the performance of the FVN clubs in the NRW League and the waiver of 1. FC Viersen , the table-14. and -15. move up to the Oberliga Niederrhein. The clubs in places 16 to 18, on the other hand, were relegated to the state league.
