Baumberg is a district of Monheim am Rhein , a town in the Mettmann district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).
history
Baumberg was first mentioned in a document in 1296 as "Boimberg". Settlement cores were courtyards such as Kirberger, Sander-, Verresberger and Hoher Hof. In the Baumberger Aue, also called Urdenbacher Kämpe , is Haus Bürgel , which was built on the remains of a Roman fort from the time of Constantine I (306 to 337).
Up until the 20th century, Baumberg was a village that made a living from Rhine fishing, agriculture, goat breeding and traditional handicrafts such as basket weaving . The eel - smokehouse in Baumberg was from 1857 to 2009 and used fish from their own catch, until the 1960s, the water pollution of the Rhine was too large, and then eels from Northern Europe.
At the end of 1900 the population was around 1,200, the proportion of Catholics was 98 percent.
The communities Monheim and Baumberg joined the goat breeding association of the district of Solingen in November 1902 . The goat, colloquially known as the hip , was the little man's cow . The district promoted goat breeding, particularly in the small and poor rural community of Baumberg. A stand was specially set up on Schallenstrasse.
In 1908 the Baumberg volunteer fire brigade was founded.
In 1929 Baumberg belonged to the newly founded Rhein-Wupper district .
After the Second World War , the municipality had just over 2,000 inhabitants in 1946 and the population began to grow steadily.
Baumberg gave up his independence in 1951 and merged with the neighboring community of Monheim to the south. Baumberg and Monheim today form the town of Monheim am Rhein with a total area of 2,312 hectares, Baumberg's share is 612 hectares.
From 1952 to 1956, the Hein Lehmann AG workers' settlement was built.
From 1965 onwards, the increase in the population accelerated considerably through forced housing construction. In 1965 Baumberg had almost 5,000 inhabitants, in 1969 it was over 10,000. In Baumberg-Ost, a new housing estate was built with large multi-storey buildings, but also numerous single-family houses, the so-called Österreichviertel .
As a result of the influx, the proportion of Protestant citizens in Baumberg increased, so that in the 1960s it became necessary to build a separate Protestant church for Baumberg, which was popularly known as a bunker due to the architectural design (hence the name of the newspaper that existed since 1975 Protestant parish Baumberg Bunker-Echo ). The concrete building was designed by the Swiss architect Walter Maria Förderer. In the 1980s the Evangelical Church was baptized with the name Friedenskirche .
In the mid-1980s, the allotment garden in Im Baumberger Feld was created on the border with Düsseldorf-Hellerhof .
In 2002 the Knipprather Busch allotment garden association moved to Loheck in Baumberg, as the original location on the former Henkel landfill was to be renovated.
On 26 September 2004, the club unveiled Boom Berger Hippe Guard in memory of the former goat breeding station of the district Solingen on a traffic island at the confluence of sound street / In the streets, a monument . The bronze sculpture is industrially manufactured and shows a billy goat standing on its hind legs.
Around a third of the 43,000 inhabitants of Monheim lived in the Baumberg district in July 2004.
Catholic community
The Catholic community was mentioned for the first time in 1296, and in 1890 it gained independence as an independent parish with 1,800 believers, the number of which has grown to around 7,000 today.

Traffic routes
Baumberg can be reached via five streets. Two come from Monheim am Rhein in the south, Monheimer Strasse and Baumberger Strasse, one, Urdenbacher Weg ( Landesstrasse 293), connects via Urdenbacher Kämpe with Düsseldorf-Urdenbach in the north ; one, the Garather Weg (Kommunalstrasse 13), to the west with Düsseldorf-Hellerhof and one, the Berghausener Strasse (Landesstrasse 353), to the west with Langenfeld i. Rhld. Via this street there is a connection to the federal highway 59 with connection no. 24 ( Richrath / Baumberg) . The closest option to cross the Rhine is the car ferry from Düsseldorf-Urdenbach to Dormagen-Zons in the Rhine district of Neuss . Since summer 2012, a ferry from Monheim am Rhein to Dormagen- Piwipp has been crossing the Rhine at the weekend . The ferry service of the so-called "Piwipper Böötchen" takes place in 2013 from the end of March to the end of October.

The bus routes are operated by the railways of the city of Monheim . The stops Düsseldorf-Hellerhof , Düsseldorf-Benrath and Düsseldorf-Reisholz of the S-Bahn line S 6 (Cologne - Düsseldorf - Essen) are in the neighboring city of Düsseldorf and can be reached by bus line 789. The 788 bus also runs to the stop in Benrath. The Langenfeld Berghausen Station since 2017 over the lines 777 and express bus bound SB78. The city of Monheim and its transport company, the railways of the city of Monheim, belong to both the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS). However, the VRR tariff applies without exception to the bus routes through Baumberg. The VRS tariff is only used when driving to other cities in the VRS tariff area (e.g. Leverkusen or Cologne ).
tram
In 1908 the first tram rolled between Monheim and Langenfeld station and quickly became the most important means of transport. As a result of the motorization after the Second World War, the number of passengers dropped drastically; the last tram with the terminus in the main street below the church of St. Dionysius ran on June 15, 1963.
Public facilities
Citizen's Office
Since April 1, 2015, all citizens ' concerns can be addressed in a branch of the Monheim Citizens' Office every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is located in the premises of a bank at Hauptstrasse 64, at the corner of Thomasstrasse.
The citizens' office, which had previously been open once a week since April 18, 2000 in Holzweg 95, was not very well received. It was closed on November 9, 2005 as a result of the austerity package adopted by the Council.
fire Department
The Baumberg volunteer fire brigade, founded in 1908, is now part of the voluntary fire brigade of the city of Monheim am Rhein and is run as Baumberg Fire Brigade II . The fire engine is housed in the fire station at the Kreuzstrasse / Thomasstrasse intersection.
hospital
Baumberg never had a hospital. The St. Josef Hospital in Monheim was closed in 2013.
Sports facility
In 1981 the district sports facility was set up in the Österreichviertel.
economy
The shops are mainly located in the main street, which is designed as a one- way street, and in the shopping center on Holzweg, which was built in the late 1960s . The shops are not very specialized, mainly consumer goods and goods for everyday needs . In the main street in particular, the small number of parking spaces is classified as problematic by traders. The main street has been beautified from city funds since mid-February 2016. It should be completed by mid-2017.
The foundry on Berghausener Strasse / Heinrich-Hertz-Strasse operated by Schmolz and Bickenbach was closed in 2009. After the demolition, an Edeka market with a bakery and a residential complex have been built on the site since May 2013.

Baumberg does not have any secondary schools himself. Most of the students attend secondary schools in Monheim am Rhein, Düsseldorf and Langenfeld in the Rhineland.
Culture and leisure
The Bürgel house in Urdenbacher Kämpe has a museum on Roman history .
Archaeological finds have been exhibited since 2003 . The eight exhibition rooms are supplemented by an outside path that leads visitors along the former fort walls.
The paving lifts the position of several towers, a gate and the former fort bath, as well as the location of the Roman cemetery is marked in the area.
Since the 1990s there have been independent carnival clubs in Baumberg (1st Baumberger Carnival Society 1990 eV, 1st Boomberger Hippegarde from 1998, "Mounted Guards on Foot" Kin Wiever from 1999), which have their own Veedelszoch ( Kölsch for carnival parade through the Quarter ). This takes place one day before Shrove Monday, while the carnival procession in Monheim am Rhein takes place on Shrove Monday itself.

St. Dionysius Church
The tower of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Dionysius dates from the 12th century. It was named after Dionysius of Paris .
Friedenskirche
The Protestant community center of the Friedenskirche was built between 1968 and 1974 according to plans by the Swiss architect Walter Maria Förderer . It is an outstanding example of the Brutalist architectural style in the Rhineland.
House Bürgel
The Bürgel house is a medieval royal estate in the Baumberg district of the city of Monheim am Rhein on the border with Düsseldorf , which goes back to Roman origins.
Community center
