from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Piwipp was until 1977 a ship-order station for Navigation on the Rhine with a foot ferry to Monheim am Rhein and is now a tourist restaurant in the city Dormagen .

location

The Piwipp has an altitude of 40 m above sea level. Monheim am Rhein is on the other side of the Rhine. The village of Rheinfeld is located north of the Piwipp .

history

Oral tradition says that there was a monastery here in the Middle Ages . In 1257 there was a land customs office in Monheim. This suggests that a ferry already existed at that time. In 1374 the ferry service between Monheim and "ahm Wittenberg aufem Cöllnischen" was documented. In 1566 the ferry was leased from the Monheim church and in 1666 the Piwipper ferry belonged to the St. Pantaleon Monastery in Cologne . Since 1809, the Piwipp leaseholder has also transported people and cattle from the left side to the right bank of the Rhine. Since 1815 the Piwipp belonged to the mayor of Worringen . In 1922 this was dissolved and Piwipp came to Dormagen and became part of the village of Rheinfeld . In 1925 the ferryman Wilhelm Siepen bought the first motorboat , the "Gunda". The boat had 34 hp. In 1964, the Piwipp order station placed an average of 30 orders per day on passing ships. In 1968 the new motorboat "Hol über" with 84 HP was put into service. In 1970 the Rhine crossing cost 30 pfennigs . In 1977 the ferry service was stopped. After more than 160 years, the Piwipp order station was also closed. The "Verein Piwipper Böötchen eV" was founded to revive ferry operations. After the test operation in 2012, regular ferry operations began in March 2013. In later years the ferry service took place from the beginning of April to mid-October on weekends and public holidays.
