About this picture

Monheim am Rhein [ ˈmoːnhaɪ̯m ] is a medium-sized town in the Mettmann district in the North Rhine-Westphalian administrative district of Düsseldorf .

geography

Monheim is located on the Rhine and, with around 40,000 inhabitants, is a small medium- sized town and the sixth largest in the Mettmann district. In the north it borders on Düsseldorf , in the east on Langenfeld , in the west - separated by the Rhine - on Dormagen and Cologne and in the south on Leverkusen .

The urban area is largely part of the Benrath Rhine Plain. Monheim is the lowest-lying town in the Mettmann district, which is otherwise predominantly characterized by the hilly landscape of the Niederberg region.

Baumberg , the oldest district of Monheim, is located in the north of the urban area. In Monheim there are several settlements such as Blee , an old district, Zaunswinkel, the Henkelsiedlung, the Sandberg, the Berlin district of LEG or the Musikantenviertel in Monheim-Süd and the Österreichviertel in Baumberg.

climate

The climate of Monheim am Rhein essentially corresponds to the climate of Düsseldorf , which is only a few kilometers to the north.

history

The Blee district was mentioned as early as the 10th century in connection with an Oberhof for farms in Monheim, Richrath and Rheindorf. Monheim was first mentioned in a document in 1157. During the reign of the Duchy of Berg , Monheim was the seat of the administration of the Bergisch Office Monheim .

Monheim was raised to freedom in 1390 . This is likely to have occurred in the area of tension between the Archbishops of Cologne and the Counts of Berg because of the strategically important location on the Rhine.

1275 Monheim received from Count Adolf a city attachment , in return for fixing Worringen by the Archbishop .

Just four years later, Count Adolf had to grind the fortifications again, and Monheim was not given a new fortification until 1415, which only lasted two years. The last fortification took place in 1423, of which the rogue tower is still preserved today.

In 1806 the Monheim office ceased to exist after Napoleon I founded the Rhine Confederation . The Grand Duchy of Berg was newly founded , where a municipality of Monheim with Baumberg, Hitdorf and Rheindorf was established. The mayor's office in Monheim continued to exist when, after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the Rhine Province was assigned to Prussia . From 1904 to 1908 the trackless railway Monheim – Langenfeld ran between the city and the neighboring town of Langenfeld, then from 1908 to 1963 a small train on rails in standard gauge . In 1929 Monheim was part of the newly founded Rhein-Wupper district . In 1951 Monheims and Baumbergs merged to form one community; Hitdorf joined in 1960 and had had its own town charter since 1857 . Monheim has also had town status since 1960. On January 1, 1975, the town of Monheim as part of the nationwide was territorial reform to Dusseldorf incorporated, the district Hitdorf separated and in the city of Leverkusen was incorporated. After a successful lawsuit before the State Constitutional Court in Münster , the city became independent again on July 1, 1976. The former Hitdorf district, however, remained with Leverkusen.

Since October 15, 1993, the official place name has been Monheim am Rhein .

The city has a city coat of arms, a flag and an official seal as well as a logo. The right to use a coat of arms was granted to the city in a certificate dated January 4, 1939 by the Upper President of the Rhine Province in Koblenz .

"

Since 1939 Monheim am Rhein has had a gosling in its coat of arms, which was designed by heraldist Wolfgang Pagenstecher in 1791 based on the model of the seal of Bailiff Johann Wilhelm Aschenbroich with the motto "NOCET ESSE LOCUTUM" (chatter harms). The old identification mark, the Bergische lion shield of the former sovereigns, is added to this symbol .

The Creative Campus Monheim extends on Alfred-Nobel-Strasse, an industrial park on the former Schwarz-Pharma site, on which start-up companies are based in addition to UCB and Bayer Intellectual Property GmbH.

For decades, the industrial area between Monheim and Baumberg was home to a Royal Dutch Shell oil refinery that shaped the cityscape . The railroad traffic to her ran over the railways of the city of Monheim , whose tracks ran through the middle of the city until 1983. The refinery was shut down in 1987. Some of the tracks of the former “Shellbahn” are still visible, for example on the western shoulder of Krischerstraße.

Bayer AG's CO pipeline for the transport of carbon monoxide between Uerdingen and Dormagen also runs through the city, and there has been strong resistance to putting it into operation. With the exception of the SPD parliamentary group, the city council voted for a resolution against the CO pipeline. In May 2011, a work of art was set up against the CO pipeline, depicting a pipe with a knot. On the accompanying information board, all parties represented in the city council (including the SPD) confirm that they are against the CO pipeline.

The St. Josef Hospital in Monheim, which last belonged to the Kplus Group , was closed in August 2013 and served as a filming location for a Münster crime scene in October 2014 .

shop

The shops in Monheim am Rhein are mainly concentrated in Rathaus-Center I and II (8,500 m²) as well as Monheimer Tor (7,000 m²) and its immediate surroundings: Ernst-Reuter- Platz, Krischerstraße and Alten Schulstraße. In the Baumberg district there is the shopping center on Holzweg and Hauptstrasse as the main shopping street. The main focus is on everyday goods.

Tax competition and criticism

The trade tax assessment rate was reduced to 300 points in April 2012 and has been the lowest in North Rhine-Westphalia since then. As a result, more and more companies settled in Monheim, so that ultimately the city's trade tax income rose sharply. The city has been debt free since June 2013. By 2017, a reserve of 100 million euros is to be built up from the budget surpluses so that economic fluctuations can be balanced out. In 2014, the business tax rate was reduced to 285 points, as of January 1, 2016 to 265 points. As of January 1, 2018, the trade tax was reduced from the 260 points applicable in 2017 to 250 points. The Handelsblatt reported in 2016 that Monheim's success was at the expense of other NRW cities. The North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament member Stefan Zimkeit (SPD) criticized Monheim's tax policy in 2016 and warned against a “competition between the municipalities”. In 2019, 21 North Rhine-Westphalian municipalities signed the "Zons Declaration" in order to prevent a further race towards lower business tax rates.
