The Gleislose Bahn Monheim – Langenfeld was a trolleybus operation - at that time still called Gleislose Bahn - in the Rhineland . The overland route connected the city of Monheim am Rhein with Langenfeld (Rhineland) station to the east , where there was a connection to the trains on the Cologne – Duisburg line .
history
The trackless railway Monheim – Langenfeld existed from May 31, 1904 to November 5, 1908 and covered a distance of 4.5 kilometers. It was operated according to the so-called Schiemann system , developed by the Saxon company Society for Trackless Railways Max Schiemann & Co. from Wurzen . The speed was twelve to sixteen kilometers per hour, in addition to people, up to 5,000 tons of goods were transported annually, as well as mail . The freight carried as needed, mainly the former was brick factory on the eastern outskirts of Monheim served.
The route was consistently single-lane, there were no air switches or turning loops . If two vehicles met, one of them had to pull off the pantograph poles. At the two end points, these had to be turned around with the help of horses , sometimes with great effort.
The trackless railway Monheim – Langenfeld had to be closed again after four years because the ten-ton wagons ruined the road surface . At that time it was replaced by a standard-gauge electric small train operated by the small railway Langenfeld – Monheim – Hitdorf .
vehicles
Initially, a motor vehicle and an identically constructed sidecar were available for passenger transport , later the trailer was also converted into a motor vehicle. The passenger vehicles of the railway also carried mail . The two passenger cars were identical to the vehicles used on the Veischedetalbahn .
Freight traffic was carried out with a trolley tractor, to which several two-axle trailers were coupled.
