In the North Rhine-Westphalian municipal elections in 1999 , PETO immediately received 6.1 percent of all votes in Monheim am Rhein and entered the city council with two members. The party also ran for the state elections in 2000 and received 0.01 percent of the vote nationwide.

In the 2004 local elections , the result increased to 16.6% of all votes in Monheim, making PETO, with seven council members, the third largest parliamentary group in Monheim's city council after the CDU and SPD .

In the local elections in 2009 , PETO drew 29.56% of the votes cast in Monheim almost level with the CDU parliamentary group (30.17%) and became the second largest party. Like the CDU, it won 12 of 40 seats. At the same time, on August 30, 2009, Daniel Zimmermann was elected Monheim's youngest mayor to date with 30.35%.

After the 2009 election, the PETO-governed city initiated a significant reduction in business tax. Previously, the neighboring town of Langenfeld had already lowered trade taxes and thus poached company headquarters, now Monheim had the lowest tax rate and companies therefore relocated their headquarters to Monheim (without having actual production sites on site). Among other things, the chemical company BASF has a mailbox in Monheim, which increased income for Monheim and improved the financial situation. Zimmermann and PETO received a lot of praise in the media for this policy, but were also criticized for the tax haven tactics that are at the expense of the surrounding areas.

In the 2014 local elections , PETO won 26 out of 40 seats in Monheim and thus an absolute majority in the city council. Zimmermann was also confirmed as head of the city with almost 95% of the vote.

organization

The board consists of ten members. He is elected every two years by the party congress.

Each council member works on at least one committee. In addition, the council members of PETO are represented in other bodies, for example the supervisory board of MVV, the board of trustees of the Sparkassenstiftung or the board of directors of the Monheimer Kunstschule. Lisa Pientak (Riedel) has been the parliamentary group leader since 2006.

The group also includes the managing director and the two group secretaries who take care of the group office and deal with organizational activities.

Projects

In order to involve older people with their skills and experience at PETO, an AG 30 plus was founded in June 2009 : Every four to six weeks, discussions are held here on various political topics, the results of which are to be incorporated into the PETO work in municipal committees and bodies . Normally, registration for the PETO- AG-30-plus is associated with regular party membership in the PETO, but a non-binding registration as a guest is also possible.

In 2016, the decision of the Monheim City Council by the PETO parliamentary group and, against the votes of all other parliamentary groups, to give two mosque associations, including the controversial DİTİB , plots worth around 850,000 euros free of charge for the construction of a mosque, caused a stir . The PETO mayor would like these mosques to be "cityscape-defining" buildings. In return, the two communities should commit to the Basic Law and tolerance .

The party's program includes the following goals:

  • Education and culture: improving the school yard situation
  • Leisure time: Developing a bathing lake, putting the ferry back into operation, setting up a port on the Rhine, revitalizing the old town of Monheim
