Gustave Moreau
Gustave Moreau (born April 6, 1826 in Paris , † April 18, 1898 ibid) was a French painter and draftsman of symbolism .
Life
Moreau, son of the architect Louis Jean Marie Moreau and Adele Pauline des Moutiers, was a student of Théodore Chassériau at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1846 . His paintings, watercolors and drawings mainly depict biblical, mythical and fantastic scenes. He exerted a great influence on Fauvism and Surrealism .
Moreau was an excellent connoisseur of "ancient art", an admirer of Greek archaic sculptures and a lover of oriental treasures such as silk, weapons, porcelain and carpets. In his pictorial fantasies he immersed himself in the ancient myths, whereby it was not fates and events that captivated him, but the unfathomable of dream states and the horror and horror of awakening souls. In spite of all internalization, however, he gave the colors their sensual shine and an often refined, precious surface effect. His pictures should emerge from the imagination. They should be parables of sensations, premonitions, thoughts, inner experiences and dreamy excitements.
On his two trips to Italy (1841; 1857 to 1859), which took him to Venice , Florence , Rome and Naples , he devoted himself to the art of the Renaissance . He saw the original masterpieces by Andrea Mantegna , Crivelli , Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci .
In 1888 Moreau was elected to the Académie des beaux-arts in Paris. In 1891 he took over from Elie Delaunay as a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, which is affiliated with the academy . There were Georges Rouault , Henri Matisse , Albert Marquet , Henri Manguin , Edgar Maxence and Léon Printemps among his students. On Sundays he received young artists such as Ary Renan and George Desvallières in private .
Moreau died in 1898. He was buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre in Paris .
In his former home and studio in the IX. The Musée Gustave Moreau has been located in the 4th arrondissement since 1903 . Works by Moreau can also be found in the Clemens Sels Museum , Neuss .
