Albert Marquet (born March 27, 1875 in Bordeaux , † June 14, 1947 in Paris ) was a French painter. He is considered to be the co-founder of Fauvism .

life and work

Marquet began his artistic training at the age of 15 in Paris by studying at the School of Applied Arts . During this time he met Henri Matisse , with whom he had a lifelong friendship since 1892. In 1895 he moved to the École des Beaux-Arts .

Paysage du Midi (1906)

Marquet and Matisse worked together on the decorations for the Grand Palais of the Paris World's Fair in 1900 . In 1905 he exhibited at the Paris Salon d'Automne together with Maurice de Vlaminck , André Derain , Henri Matisse and other artists. The exhibition sparked a scandal that inspired art critic Louis Vauxcelles to coined the term “Fauvism”. The artist's first paintings also date from this period, and with their decorative, strong colors, they fully corresponded to the sense of style of the new art movement.

Le port d'Alger in la brume (1943)

From 1906 Marquet undertook extensive trips through Europe, including France, Germany, Russia and Scandinavia. From 1940 to 1945 he lived in Algiers . Only then did he finally return to Paris.

The Russian writer Ilja Ehrenburg , who lived in Paris for a long time, describes the short painter as simple and modest. "The comforts of life were completely indifferent to him." He was close to communist ideas, but wanted nothing to do with politics. “What is astonishing about his pictures is the sparse means of expression; they are difficult in their simplicity, artistic in their simplicity of heart. A little gray, blue and green - and the world comes to life. "

Some of Marquet's works were shown posthumously at documenta II (1959) and documenta III in Kassel in 1964 .
