Théodore Chassériau (born September 20, 1819 in Saint-Domingue , † October 8, 1856 in Paris ) was a French painter of Romantic Classicism .

He studied at the age of 11 in the studio of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres , but later on Paul Delaroche and Eugène Delacroix in particular influenced him . In his day, Théodore Chassériau was known for his portraits and historical scenes, including his Tepidarium à Pompéi from 1853 , which, like many others , is exhibited in the Louvre . He had a great influence on Puvis de Chavannes and Gustave Moreau .
