- July 3 : The Imperial Russian Army occupies the Danube principalities in the Balkans under Ottoman suzerainty .
- October 16 : With the declaration of war by the Ottoman Empire on Russia , the Crimean War begins .
- November 30th : The Russian Black Sea Fleet under Vice Admiral Pawel Stepanowitsch Nachimow destroys the Ottoman fleet in the port of Sinope (see Battle of Sinope ). - March 4 : Franklin Pierce is inducted into office as 14th US President. He replaces Millard Fillmore .
- April 18 : Vice President William R. King dies of tuberculosis after only 45 days in office . Since the appointment of a successor is not permitted at this point in time, the Pierce cabinet remains without a vice-president for almost the entire legislative period .
- December 30th : The Gadsden purchase gives the United States border areas with Mexico .

- Vélez in the Republic of New Granada , today's Colombia , is the first city to introduce women's suffrage .
