Georg Ahsbahs (* 1853 ; † February 5, 1923 ) is a symbol of the planned Holstein horse breeding.

Life

Georg Ahsbahs came from a respected family on the Kremper Marsch . The horse dealer Jürgen Ahsbas was one of his ancestors . From 1875 he was the owner of a farm in Sommerlander Riep (Gravert no. 896). He became an economics councilor and lieutenant in the reserve. In 1895 he became a member of the Chamber of Agriculture for the Steinburg district . He was also chairman of the exhibition committee of the Chamber of Agriculture. In 1895 he also became chairman of the BdL, later he was deputy chairman. From 1921 he was a member of the supervisory board of the Westholsteinische Bank; in the same year he was a co-founder of the Detlefsen Society . As a senior citizen he lived in Glückstadt .

In 1891 Ahsbahs united various horse breeding associations to form the Association of Horse Breeding Associations in the Holstein Marches, of which he was chairman until his death. The association of breeders of the Holsteiner horse, which still exists today, emerged from the merger of this association with the Schleswig-Holstein Geestland Association in 1935. A change in the breeding goal from heavy cavalry horses to powerful draft horses took place at the end of the 19th century, when Ahsbahs was active.

Ahsbahs was an advocate of targeted stallion rearing. The first volume of the Holstein Stud Book comes from him ; He also wrote a work on horse breeding in the Kremper Marsch and other specialist publications.

Ahsbahs collected the ancestry of the horses in the Elbmarsch and the surrounding area as preliminary work for the stud book. He went back to the beginning of the 19th century and assigned the animals to individual mare families. He then numbered these. The system of these trunk numbers is still used today; the lower a stem number, the earlier the Ahsbahs' mare family was recorded. So the number does not express a quality feature of the horses, but geographical proximity to the starting point of the cataloging work. Holstein foals each receive their mother's line number. The number is printed out in the pedigree and entered in the Holsteiner Verband's mare line register.

Ahsbahs' monument in front of the riding and driving school in Elmshorn

Ahsbahs' monument stands in front of the Elmshorn riding and driving school , which he founded in 1894. This facility once offered boarding courses that were unique in the world and taught how to handle horses properly. Furthermore, it was and is an important place for the trade in Holstein horses. Almost the entire stallion population of the association is also in Elmshorn.

A medal named after Georg Ahsbahs is awarded to successful breeders of Holstein horses.
