Detlefsen Society

The Detlefsen-Gesellschaft Glückstadt eV is an association for researching the history of the Elbmarschen (Kremper and Wilstermarsch). The aim is to expand and deepen knowledge of regional history.

history

The association was founded on February 18, 1921 in Glückstadt by public figures. Its name refers to the grammar school professor Privy Councilor Detlef Detlefsen (1834–1911), the long-time director of the Glückstadt grammar school, whose two-volume "History of the Holstein Elbmarschen" (Glückstadt 1891 and 1892) is an exemplary work of the slowly developing regional scholarly historiography in the province Schleswig-Holstein had submitted. Detlefsen, actually a classical philologist and emerged with the edition of the " Naturalis historia " of Pliny, took the opportunity to study a limited region (primarily the Kremper and Wilstermarsch on the Lower Elbe ) with the help of the edited documents (see Schleswig-Holstein Regesta and documents), the documents on the farms and community archives and the preserved material culture (see Detlefsen Museum in Glückstadt) to depict the development between approx. 1100 and 1830 in a variety of ways. The founding appeal of the society from 1921 takes its cue from it when it says that one wants to work in the spirit of the man "who was a connoisseur of our homeland and a herald of its uniqueness and beauty".

The founders were conservative older men who dealt with regional history themselves, including the large farmer Thies Hinrich Engelbrecht (Herzhorn-Obendeich) or Georg Ahsbahs (1858–1923; horse breeder), known as the father of agricultural geography , and came mainly from Glückstadt. In the 1920s the society organized several "Heimattage der Krempermarsch" (1923–1930 in Krempe, Kollmar , Hohenfelde and Borsfleth ) together with other associations . Individual members took part in the three-volume work "Heimatbuch des Kreis Steinburg" (Glückstadt 1924–1926). The company also participated in the town anniversaries of Wilster (650 years 1932) and Krempe (700 years 1934).

The 1930s were marked by National Socialist influence, especially by the presiding magistrate (later Reichserbhofrichter) Walter Kahlke. However, he did not continue the public lectures that were sporadically organized from 1930–1933, but fought against the takeover of society by Nazi cultural organizations. The members met for an internal exchange even after the chairman moved to Celle (and later Berlin). With the end of the Nazi dictatorship , the association was dissolved, but was reconstituted on June 2, 1947 in Glückstadt with the approval of the military government . It was not until 1949 that the first public lecture event could be held.

In irregular succession it continued with individual lectures; Since 1952, there have been irregular half-day excursions into the closer and wider surroundings, which have become more permanent since 1970 and have been offered twice a year (early and late summer) since 1997. The program has been regular since 1956: monthly lectures (i.e. six per year) on topics of local, regional and state history in all areas (economic, social, cultural, church and art history) were now offered in the winter half-year. The Detlefsen Society also had a cultural and political impact in many ways by attempting to influence monument preservation, soil preservation and urban planning decisions. The members of the society contributed with numerous contributions to the "Steinburger Yearbooks" and to the production of the three-volume work "Glückstadt im Wandel der Zeiten" (Glückstadt 1963–1968). The first relocation of a farm from Herzhorn (Heidenreichscher Hof) to the Schleswig-Holstein open-air museum in Molfsee, which is in the process of being founded, was initiated by the Detlefsen Society. In 1959 it enabled the edition of the correspondence between Hermann Allmers (Rechtenfleth) and Detlef Detlefsen - a work by Oldenburg-born Rudolf Knoop that had been completed in the 1930s, the printing of which required great financial efforts. Also the publication of the extensive typescript by Wilhelm Ehlers, Herzhorn. The history of the parish and the Herzhorn rule was initiated in 1964 by the Detlefsen Society.

In the course of the 1950s, the Detlefsen Society changed more and more from an association of researchers to a member society made up of around 100 citizens interested in local and regional history from Glückstadt and the surrounding area. Since 1998, the Detlefsen Society, which was entered in the register of associations in 1997 and recognized by the tax office as worthy of support, has been publishing a yearbook called "Lectures of the Detlefsen Society", which enables the lectures to be made known to a wider audience and citable . So far 15 volumes have been published. A memorial colloquium in memory of DSF Detlefsen took place in Glückstadt in autumn 2011; here the importance of the namesake as a classical philologist, pedagogue, landscape historian and museum founder was honored. On this occasion, the company published the reader "Detlefsen - The Man of Science - A Man of the People" (edited by Ruth Möller). In 2014 the volume " Detlefsen on the 100th anniversary of death. A colloquium of the Detlefsen Society Glückstadt " was published.
