Karl Anton Friedrich Meinrad Fidelis von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (born February 20, 1785 in Sigmaringen , † March 11, 1853 in Bologna ) was Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen from 1831 to 1848 .

Life

Karl was the son of Prince Anton Aloys von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1762–1831) from his marriage to Amalie Zephyrine (1760–1841), daughter of Prince Philipp Joseph zu Salm-Kyrburg . His mother left her ten-week-old son in Sigmaringen and spent a large part of her life in Paris. There she prevented the mediatization of the Hohenzollern principality. She also paved the way for Charles's marriage to a niece of Napoleon's youngest sister, Caroline Bonaparte .

Karl, who was considered "rather shy", married Antoinette (1793–1847), eight years younger than Pierre Murat, a brother of the Grand Duke von Berg and later Neapolitan King Joachim Murat , on February 4, 1808 in Paris . The wedding, which was not befitting the status, was contractually signed by the Prussian house in order to legitimize the children and their claims to the nobility. In the subsequent campaigns of the coalition wars , Karl took part in the French army and was often in Napoleon's personal service, but switched to the side of the Allies in 1813.

Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen

He followed his father in 1831 as Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, but had already played a major role in government affairs. In 1833 Karl convened a constituent state parliament and proclaimed a constitutional charter as a constitution for the principality. In 1838 Prince Karl Ludwig appointed Hassenpflug to head the internal administration of the principality. He founded the state hospital and had the Ständehaus, a government and chamber building, built on Leopoldplatz in Sigmaringen (today the seat of the Hohenzollerische Landesbank ). Charles's merit was also the abolition of serfdom and various basic charges, the construction of Antonsstrasse and Karlsstrasse in Sigmaringen as well as the Prince's building there. He was considered well-read and was in correspondence with Alexander von Humboldt .

In the course of the revolution in Sigmaringen in 1848, Karl abdicated on August 27, 1848 in favor of his more liberal-minded son Karl Anton .

On March 14, 1848, after the death of his first wife, Karl married Katharina (1817–1893), daughter of Prince Karl Albrecht von Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst and widow of Count Franz Erwin von Ingelheim in Kupferzell .

Karl died in Bologna during a trip to Rome.
