Gioacchino Napoleone Pepoli (born October 10, 1825 in Bologna , † March 26, 1881 ibid) was an Italian politician and diplomat .

Life

Gioacchino Pepoli was born in 1825 as the son of the mayor of his hometown Guido Taddeo Pepoli (1789-1852), who belonged to an old family of the Bolognese city nobility. His mother was Letizia Murat (1802-1859), a daughter of the French cavalry officer and later King of Naples Joachim Murat . Napoleon III was his cousin. At the age of 18 he married his cousin, the 24-year-old Friederike von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1820–1906) in Sigmaringen on December 5, 1844 , with whom he had three daughters.

From 1848 Pepoli was actively involved in the reform and liberation movements in what was then the papal state , and also fought against the Austrians near Montagnola.

From 1860 member of the city council of Bologna, he was from March 3 to December 7, 1862 Minister of Agriculture, Industry and Trade in the Rattazzi government . From 1860 until his appointment as senator, the Marchese was also a member of the Camera dei deputati for four terms . From 1863 to 1864 he was then extraordinary envoy and plenipotentiary minister of Italy at the Russian court in Saint Petersburg . From May 7, 1866 to May 20, 1868 he went back once more into local politics as mayor of Bologna , and on March 12, 1868 he was appointed senator . His last professional position followed in 1868 as envoy at the Austro-Hungarian court in Vienna , a post he held until 1870. He then retired.
