Albert O. Brown

Albert Oscar Brown (born July 18, 1853 in Northwood , Rockingham County , New Hampshire , † March 28, 1937 in Manchester , New Hampshire) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Hampshire from 1921 to 1923 .

Early years and political advancement

Brown attended Dartmouth College until 1878 and then studied law at Boston University . After his admission as a lawyer in 1884, he worked in Manchester for various law firms. In 1910 and 1911 he was special advisor to the New Hampshire government in a trial before the state Supreme Court over taxation of railroads. Between 1905 and 1912 he was also President of Amoskeag Savings Bank .

Albert Brown was a member of the Republican Party . From 1911 to 1921 he was chairman of the tax commission of his state. Between 1918 and 1921 he was also chairman of a committee for the revision of the state constitution. In 1920 he was elected as his party's candidate for the new governor.

New Hampshire Governor

Albert Brown took up his new office on January 6, 1921. During his two-year tenure, the budget deficit was reduced, although taxes were cut at the same time. In view of the ever-increasing volume of traffic, the road network in New Hampshire was further expanded. Governor Brown refused to run again in 1922 and therefore resigned from office on January 4, 1923.

In 1924, Albert Brown was a delegate to the Republican National Convention , where Calvin Coolidge was again nominated as a presidential candidate. Brown became chairman of the New Hampshire Bankers Association and was a member of the General Court of New Hampshire from 1925 to 1926 . From 1911 to 1931 he was also a curator of Dartmouth College and a member of several boards of directors. Governor Brown died in March 1937. He was married to Susie Jane Clarke.
