John Hardy Steele

John Hardy Steele (born January 4, 1789 in Salisbury , Rowan County , North Carolina , † July 3, 1865 in Peterborough , New Hampshire ) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Hampshire from 1844 to 1846 .

Early years and political advancement

After the early death of his parents, John Steele grew up as an orphan. He left school early to earn some money. At first he was engaged in the manufacture of Windsor chairs , small horse-drawn carriages and sulkies. A carriage builder named Nathaniel Morrison took him to New Hampshire in 1811. There Steele completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith. Then he built a cotton mill for a textile factory. He later developed the first machine-powered spinning mill in New Hampshire.

John Steele was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1829 he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives, and in 1830 he was a member of the advisory board to Governor Matthew Harvey . Between 1830 and 1838 he was the leader of the town hall of his hometown Peterborough. In 1842 he made a trip to England and Ireland , where he was brought up to date with the latest machine technology.

New Hampshire Governor

In 1844 Steele was elected the new governor of his state. After a re-election the following year he was able to remain in this office between June 6, 1844 and June 4, 1846. During this time, a railroad committee was formed in New Hampshire. It was then that iron smelting began to flourish in New Hampshire. During his tenure, the Mexican-American War began . With regard to the Oregon Territory and the annexation of Texas , he supported his party's stance behind the policies of President James K. Polk .

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, he became a councilor in his home parish in 1848. Then he retired to his farm. He died in July 1865. John Steele was married twice with a total of six children.
