George A. Ramsdell

George Allen Ramsdell (born March 11, 1834 in Milford , Hillsborough County , New Hampshire , † November 16, 1900 in Nashua , New Hampshire) was an American politician and governor of the state of New Hampshire from 1897 to 1899 .

Early years and political advancement

George Ramsdell attended the McCollom Institute and Amherst College in Massachusetts . After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1857. Then he started to work in his new profession in Peterborough . Ramsdell was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1861 and 1862 he was a chamberlain in Hillsborough County. Between 1864 and 1887 he was employed by the district's highest court. Since 1866 he lived in Nashua.

Ramsdell also made a career in the business world, serving on the boards of several railways, banks, schools and industrial companies. Between 1869 and 1872 he was an MP in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, and in 1876 he was a member of a committee to review the New Hampshire Constitution. From 1891 to 1892 he was a member of the Executive Council . In 1893 he turned down an appeal to the Supreme Court of his state.

New Hampshire Governor

In 1896, George Ramsdell was elected as the new governor of his state. He took up his new office on January 7, 1897. During his tenure, the Spanish-American War fell , to which New Hampshire also had to make its contribution. At that time, a control committee was formed in New Hampshire to oversee the issuing of medical licenses. Governor Ramsdell also kept an eye on the state budget. To reduce or avoid unnecessary expenditure, all items were checked in advance.

After his tenure ended on January 5, 1899, Ramsdell withdrew from politics. He died less than two years later in November 1900. He had four children with his wife, Eliza D. Wilson.
