Margaret "Maggie" Wood Hassan (born February 27, 1958 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American politician . She has been governor of the US state of New Hampshire since January 3, 2013, and won the US Senate election there in November 2016 .

Life

Private

Margaret Wood is the youngest of three children born to Margaret Byers and Robert Coldwell Wood . Her father served as an advisor to US President John F. Kennedy and served under his successor Lyndon B. Johnson from January 7 to January 20, 1969 for two weeks as US Secretary of Construction . She is married to Thomas Hassan , who has been President of the Phillips Exeter Academy since September 2009 . The marriage resulted in two children, son Ben and daughter Meg. Her brother is the actor Frank Wood

Career

Hassan studied law , received her BA from Brown University and her Juris Doctor from Northeastern University in Boston. From 1985 to 1992 she worked as an attorney at the law firm Palmer & Dodge in Boston. She later worked as a legal advisor for the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

In the mid-1990s she came to New Hampshire, where incumbent Governor Jeanne Shaheen appointed her to the Education and Finance Committee in 1999. It was Hassan's first step into politics.

Political career

In 2002 Hassan ran for a seat in the New Hampshire Senate for the first time , but the Democratic candidate was defeated by her Republican opponent, incumbent Senator Russell Prescott . In 2004 she tried again and was able to oust Prescott with 52 to 48 percentage points with success from his office. In 2008 Hassan was elected parliamentary group leader in the Senate's majority party. But when Prescott faced Hassan again in 2010, they lost 47 to 53 percentage points.

In October 2011, she announced her intention to run for governor of New Hampshire. In the election, which took place on November 6, 2012, she won against her Republican opponent Ovide M. Lamontagne with 54 to 42 percent.

At the beginning of October 2015, she announced that she would apply for the seat in the US Senate in the November 2016 election , which until then had been held by Republican Kelly Ayotte . Hassan won her party's primary election as the preferred candidate of the democratic party leadership to take the seat in this Blue State . She won by around 1,000 votes and took up her mandate on January 3, 2017. Her successor in the office of governor was the Republican Chris Sununu , who was elected to this office in November 2016.
