Jacob Harold Gallinger (born March 28, 1837 in Cornwall , Ontario , Canada , † August 17, 1918 in Franklin , Merrimack County , New Hampshire ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1918 he represented the state of New Hampshire in both chambers of Congress with one interruption .

Career

Jacob Gallinger attended the public schools in his home country and later received an academic education. He came to the United States at an unspecified time. He initially worked as a printer and then studied medicine at the Cincinnati Medical Institute in Ohio until 1858 . He studied abroad for the next two years. Then he settled in Concord , New Hampshire, where he practiced as a doctor. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1872 and 1873, and again for a brief period in 1891 . In 1876 he was a member of a constitutional convention of his state. Between 1878 and 1880 he was a member of the State Senate . From 1879 to 1880 he was also the Surgeon General of New Hampshire Secretary of State for New Hampshire.

In the congressional elections of 1884 Jacob Gallinger was elected as his party's candidate to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1885. After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms there until March 3, 1889. In 1888 he renounced another candidacy. Two years later he ran successfully for the US Senate , where he took his seat on March 4, 1891. After four re-elections, he could remain there until his death. During this period, the Spanish-American War of 1898 and the First World War , which had not ended when Gallinger died, took place. In 1912 and 1913 he held the office of incumbent Senate President . He was also chairman of the Committee on Transportation Routes to the Seaboard from 1891 to 1893 . He was also a member of the District of Columbia Pension Committee and Administrative Committee . In addition, in 1904 and 1905 he headed the committee that dealt with the merchant navy. During his tenure in the Senate, the 16th and 17th amendments were ratified. It was about the nationwide introduction of income tax and the direct election of US senators. Jacob Gallinger died on August 17, 1918 and was buried in Concord New Hampshire.
