Harper was a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . Between 1809 and 1810 he was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives . He was also a member of the state militia from 1809 to 1812. After his tenure in the House of Representatives, John Harper retired from federal politics. He died on June 18, 1816 in Meredith Bridge, today's Laconia, where he was also buried.
