There he took over from Joseph Weeks on March 4, 1839 . After re-election in 1840, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1843 , which were determined by the discussions about a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas to the United States. From 1841 onwards, there were violent disputes in Congress over the policies of President John Tyler , who moved further and further away from his Whig Party and moved closer to the Democrats.
