Silas Betton

Silas Betton (born August 26, 1768 in Londonderry , Rockingham County , New Hampshire Colony , † January 22, 1822 in Salem , New Hampshire ) was an American politician . Between 1803 and 1807 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Silas Betton enjoyed a private school education. He then attended Dartmouth College in Hanover until 1787 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in Salem in 1790 in his new profession.

Politically, Betton was a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1797 and 1799 he was an MP in the New Hampshire House of Representatives ; from 1801 to 1803 he was a member of the State Senate . In the 1802 congressional election, held nationwide, Betton was elected his party's candidate for the first New Hampshire congress to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he took over from George B. Upham on March 4, 1803 . After re-election in 1804, Betton was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1807 .

Between 1810 and 1811 he sat again in the House of Representatives of his state. He was then from 1813 to 1818 as Sheriff Police Chief in Rockingham County. Silas Betton died on January 22nd, 1822 in Salem and was buried there.
