Jedediah K. Smith

Jedediah Kilburn Smith (born November 7, 1770 in Amherst , Hillsborough County , New Hampshire Colony , † December 17, 1828 there ) was an American politician . Between 1807 and 1809 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jedediah Smith attended public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar , he began to practice in his new profession in Amherst in 1800. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . In 1803 he was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives ; between 1804 and 1806 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the 1806 congressional election, held nationwide, Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the fourth term of New Hampshire . There he took over on March 4, 1807, succeeding Samuel Tenney of the Federalist Party . By March 3, 1809, Smith served a term in Congress .

In 1809, Smith was re-elected to the New Hampshire Senate. In 1810 he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate . Between 1810 and 1815, Smith served as a city councilor in local politics. From 1819 to 1826 he was the postman of Amherst. He was also an associate judge of an appeals court from 1816 to 1821. He was then associate judge from 1821 to 1823 and from 1823 to 1826 presiding judge at the Court of Sessions of New Hampshire. Jedediah Smith died on December 17, 1828 in his native Amherst.
