George B. Upham

George Baxter Upham (born December 27, 1768 in Brookfield , Worcester County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , † February 10, 1848 in Claremont , New Hampshire ) was an American politician . Between 1801 and 1803 he represented the state of New Hampshire in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Upham was the younger brother of Jabez Upham (1764-1811), who represented the state of Massachusetts in Congress between 1807 and 1810 . He was also a cousin of Charles Wentworth Upham (1802–1875), who sat in Congress for Massachusetts between 1853 and 1855. George Upham attended his home public schools and the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter . He then studied at Harvard University until 1789 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1792, he began to practice in Claremont in this profession.

Politically, Upham was a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1796 and 1804 he was a district attorney in Cheshire County . In the 1800 congressional elections, which were held nationwide, Upham was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington for the first New Hampshire congress. He took up this position on March 4, 1801. Since he renounced another candidacy in 1802, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1803 .

From 1804 to 1813 and in 1815 he was an MP in the New Hampshire House of Representatives . In 1809 and 1815 he was speaker of this chamber. In 1814 he was also a member of the New Hampshire Senate . Then he worked as a lawyer again. Upham also got into banking. He died in Claremont on February 10, 1848.
