The Worcester County is a county in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . The county seat is Worcester . After the county government was abolished in 1998, the county only exists as a historical geographic region and serves some administrative purposes.
government
Like a slim majority of Massachusetts counties, Worcester County no longer has a county government. All previous functions of the county were taken over by state authorities in 1998. The sheriff and a few other regional officials with special duties are still locally elected to serve within the county. The municipalities now have greater autonomy and can conclude regional contracts to offer services together.
geography
The county has an area of 4090 square kilometers, of which 171 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cheshire County, New Hampshire , Hillsborough County, New Hampshire , Middlesex County , Norfolk County , Providence County , Windham County (Connecticut) , Tolland County , Hampden County , Hampshire County, and Franklin County .

Worcester County was formed in 1731 from parts of Hampshire County , Middlesex County and Suffolk County .
Seven places in the county have National Historic Landmark status . 648 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017).

Demographics
According to the 2000 census , Worcester County's population was 750,963 in 283,927 households and 192,502 families. The population was 89.61 percent white, 2.73 percent African American, 2.62 percent Asian, and 0.25 percent Native American. 6.77 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. The per capita income was $ 22,983; 6.8 percent of families and 9.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
