The Hampshire County is a county in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . The county seat is Northampton . After the county government was abolished in 1999, the county only exists as a historical geographic region and serves some administrative purposes.
government
Like a slim majority of Massachusetts counties, Hampshire County no longer has a county government. All previous functions of the county were taken over by state authorities in 1999. The sheriff and a few other regional officials with special duties are still locally elected to serve within the county. The municipalities now have greater autonomy and can conclude regional contracts to offer services together.

geography
The county has an area of 1,413 square kilometers, of which 42 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Franklin County , Worcester County , Hampden County, and Berkshire County .
history
Hampshire County was formed from western Massachusetts in 1662 .
Two sites in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the home of poet Emily Dickinson and the William Cullen Bryant Homestead . 81 structures and places in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017).
Demographics
According to the 2000 census , Hampshire County's population was 152,251 in 55,991 households and 33,818 families. The population was composed of 91.10 percent white, 1.96 percent African American, 3.40 percent Asian, and 0.19 percent Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.42 percent of the population. The per capita income was $ 21,685; 5.1 percent of families and 9.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
