The Dukes County is a county in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . The county seat is Edgartown .

The county has an area of 1,272 square kilometers, of which 1003 square kilometers are water. It borders Barnstable County to the north .
history
Dukes County was formed in 1695 from Martha's Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands , which were part of New York until 1691 .
Two sites in Barnstable County have National Historic Landmark status , the Flying Horses Carousel and Wesleyan Grove .

Demographics
According to the 2000 census , Dukes County's population was 14,987 in 6,421 households and 3,788 families. The population was 90.69 percent white, 2.40 percent African American, 0.46 percent Asian, and 1.71 percent Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.03 percent of the population. The per capita income was $ 26,472; 5.0 percent of families and 7.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
