The Suffolk County is a county in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . The county seat is Boston . After the county government was abolished in 1997, the county only exists as a historical geographic region and serves some administrative purposes.
government
Like a slim majority of Massachusetts counties, Suffolk County no longer has a county government. All previous functions of the county were taken over in 1997 by state authorities. The sheriff and a few other regional officials with special duties are still locally elected to serve within the county. The municipalities now have greater autonomy and can conclude regional contracts to offer services together.
geography
The county has an area of 311 square kilometers, of which 160 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Essex County , Norfolk County, and Middlesex County .
history
Suffolk County was one of Massachusetts' four founding counties in 1643.
Located in the county is a site of outstanding historical importance that is listed as a National Historic Site , the Boston African American National Historic Site . There is also the Boston National Historical Park in the county, which includes important scenes of the American Revolution . 59 sites have National Historic Landmark status , all but one of which are in Boston . A total of 301 structures and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017).

Demographics
According to the 2000 census , Suffolk County had 689,807 residents in 278,722 households and 139,082 families. The population was made up of 57.76 percent white, 22.24 percent African American, 7.00 percent Asian, and 0.39 percent Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.52 percent of the population. The per capita income was $ 22,766; 14.9 percent of families and 19.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
