The Hampden County is a county in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . The county seat is Springfield . After the county government was abolished in 1998, the county only exists as a historical geographic region and serves some administrative purposes. Hampden is the county with the lowest per capita income in Massachusetts.
government
Like a slim majority of Massachusetts counties, Hampden County no longer has a county government. All previous functions of the county were taken over by state authorities in 1998. The sheriff and a few other regional officials with special duties are still locally elected to serve within the county. The municipalities now have greater autonomy and can conclude regional contracts to offer services together.
geography
The county has an area of 1642 square kilometers, of which 41 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hampshire County , Worcester County , Tolland County, Connecticut, Hartford County (Connecticut), Litchfield County (Connecticut), and Berkshire County .
history
Hampden County was formed from parts of Hampshire County in 1812 .
In the county is a site of outstanding historical importance that is a National Historic Site , the Springfield Armory . In addition to the Armory, another site has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Edward Bellamy House . 153 buildings and places in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 17, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Hampden County's population was 461,228 people in 175,288 households and 115,690 families. The population was composed of 79.10 percent white, 8.10 percent African American, 1.30 percent Asian, and 0.26 percent Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 15.17 percent of the population. The per capita income was $ 19,541; 11.4 percent of families and 14.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
