The Edward Bellamy House is a historic house in Chicopee Falls in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It was named after the writer Edward Bellamy , who lived there for most of his life.
architecture
The two-story building is made entirely of wood and has a gable roof . The main entrance, located in a veranda supported on four pillars , is flanked by pilasters of Doric order . A cornice forms the base of a gable triangle into which a round window is let. The southern part of the building is oriented at right angles to the main building and has its own entrance as well as its own house number. The roofs of the two parts of the building form a crossed gable . This is followed by a one-story extension, also in a southerly direction.
Historical meaning
The house is important as the former home of Edward Bellamy, who moved in with his family as a child in 1852 and lived there until his death in 1898. Despite some structural changes, the building has retained its original character and now serves as a memorial to one of the most influential American writers of the 19th century.
The most important work of Bellamy, the first book published in 1888 is considered " Looking back from the year 2000 to the year 1887 " ( Looking Backward ), obtained the both literary and political significance. As utopian socialism , the book became the "focus of the entire liberalization movement of the late 19th century" in the United States. In literary studies , the work forms an important building block in a series of utopias that were written by Plato and Thomas More , among others , and is today a classic of American literature .
