Edward Bellamy (* 26. March 1850 in Chicopee , Massachusetts ; † 22. May 1898 ) was an American science fiction - Author and journalist. His best-known work is the utopian novel A Review from 2000 to 1887 .

Life

Bellamy spent most of his life in his birthplace. As the son of a Baptist pastor and a Calvinist mother, he experienced the cruelty of child labor and was shaped by the observed inhumanity of wealthy mill owners. At an early age, at 10, he began writing essays on socialist reforms.

Urged by his parents to the priesthood , he decided to study law. From 1868 to 1871 he studied law and spent a year in Germany. In 1871 he was admitted to the court and from that year worked as a journalist and editor. First he was associate editor of the Springfield Union , later editor of the Evening Post , New York . In 1880 he founded the Springfield Daily News with his brother . In 1882 he married Emma Sanderson . As early as 1885, he devoted himself only to writing.

His early prose, which also included the fantastic , does not yet show the pronounced social commitment like the novel Looking Backward 2000-1887, which founded his fame . The work appeared in 1888 and was widely received in the USA and became one of the first international bestsellers. After the publication of the work, over 150 American Bellamy clubs were founded in the USA with the aim of realizing the society described in Looking Backward . A large number of utopian writings carried on the central ideas of the work at the turn of the 20th century.

The success of this novel is presumably due to its practical treatment of the economic problems facing America at the end of the 19th century. Of course, the intertwined romance in which the description of the future is embedded did not miss the taste of the times. The work led to heated and controversial discussions. Hundreds of Bellamy companies have been set up. However, its fame faded just as quickly as it was established. His sequel Equality , published in 1897, found hardly any echo or even supporters. Shortly after the book was published, Bellamy died of tuberculosis.

Edward Bellamy is one of the pioneers of the utopian American novel and is considered the main literary representative of American reform socialism. His house is under the name "since 1971. Edward Bellamy House " as a National Historic Landmark in the National Register of Historic Places entered.
