List of National Historic Landmarks in Massachusetts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of National Historic Landmarks in Massachusetts contains the objects, districts , buildings or similar structures of the state registered as National Historic Landmarks (NHL) in the National Register of Historic Places in Massachusetts . In the city of Boston alone , around 60 objects are declared as NHL, which is why they are included in a separate list . In total, there are just under 190 entries in Massachusetts, which is the second highest value in the entire United States after New York .

Outside of Boston, Cambridge leads the order with 19 entries, while Middlesex County comes first with counties with 43 entries. Every county in Massachusetts has at least one NHL, with Franklin County coming last with exactly one entry ( Old Deerfield Historic District ).

There are different reasons for being named NHL. Some objects were included because of their age, such as some houses from the 17th century. The Fairbanks House in Dedham from the 1630s is the oldest wooden house still in existence in the United States, while the Old Ship Church in Hingham, built in 1681, is the oldest church building still used for religious purposes.

In addition to age, the significance for the historical development of the USA also creates relevance, particularly with regard to the American Revolution , which led, for example, to the inclusion of the entries Lexington Battle Green , Buckman Tavern , Wright's Tavern and Hancock-Clarke House , all of which play a role played in the battles at Lexington and Concord . Even the Isaac Royall House , the only surviving slave house in the state, is now a NHL.

Further entries have literary or artistic reasons. Herman Melville wrote a large part of his works in his Arrowhead house , Louisa May Alcott spent her childhood at Orchard House and Nathaniel Hawthorne lived at The Wayside .

In addition, the homes of eminent scientists and their places of work were included as NHL. For example, the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory in Milton is the oldest operating weather station in the United States, and Robert Goddard experimented at the Goddard Rocket Launching Site in Auburn .
