history

Stockbridge is first mentioned in 1739 when a mission for the Housatonic , a Mahican tribe , was established here. The place was given to the tribe as thanks for their support in the French and Indian wars against the French. Reverend John Sergeant from Newark was the first missionary in Indian Town , as the place was first called in 1737. On June 22, 1739 Indian Town was officially named Stockbridge after the town of Stockbridge in Hampshire , England .

The Mission House

Although the Massachusetts government promised the Indian land was not for sale, that promise was later broken. In the American Revolutionary War , the Stockbridge Indians fought on the side of the Americans. Even so, the tribe had to leave their home in Massachusetts and were relocated to Stockbridge , New York State. The Indian land became the property of white settlers. With the construction of the railroad in 1850, Stockbridge became a summer retreat for rich people from the nearby cities. Numerous large houses called Berkshire Cottages were built in the period before the First World War .

Attractions

In addition to the Berkshire Botanical Garden , the Naumkeag estate with its also noteworthy garden and the Mission House of the missionary John Sergeant are worth seeing.

The place is also the home of well-known artists, for example the sculptor Daniel Chester French , who created the famous Lincoln statue in Washington, DC , and the painter Norman Rockwell , whose works were mainly created in Stockbridge and to whom a museum is dedicated.
