Thomas C. Chittenden

Thomas Cotton Chittenden (born August 30, 1788 in Stockbridge , Massachusetts , † August 22, 1866 in Watertown , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1839 and 1843 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Cotton Chittenden was born in Stockbridge, Berkshire County , about five years after the War of Independence . He moved to Adams in Jefferson County . Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1813 and then began practicing in Adams. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party .

In the 1838 congressional elections for the 26th Congress , Chittenden was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 18th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Isaac H. Bronson on March 4, 1839 . He was re-elected once and then dropped out after the March 3, 1843 Congress of.

In 1840 he was appointed judge in Jefferson County - a position he held for five years. After taking office as a judge, he moved to Watertown. Then he went back to his activity as a lawyer, but also pursued banking transactions. He died in Watertown on August 22, 1866 and was buried in Brookside Cemetery .
