Jacob "Jake" Ruppert Jr. (born August 5, 1867 in New York City , †  January 13, 1939 there ) was an American entrepreneur, sports official and politician . Between 1899 and 1907 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . He became known as the owner of the New York Yankees baseball team .

Career

Jacob Ruppert attended Columbia Grammar School . He then worked in his father's brewery from 1887. There he started as a barrel washer. In the course of time he rose in the administration there. After his father's death in 1915, he became head of the brewery. Between 1886 and 1889 he was also a member of the national guard of his state, in which he then rose to colonel . As such, he was on the governor's staff between 1890 and 1895 . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1898 , Ruppert was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC with the support of Tammany Hall in the 15th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Republican Philip B. Low on March 4, 1899 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1907 . Since 1903 he represented the 16th district of his state there. In 1906 he renounced another candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Ruppert continued to work in the brewery business. Between 1911 and 1914 he was President of the United States Brewers' Association . He was also involved in other lines of business, such as the real estate industry. He was also President of Astoria Silk Works . Ruppert, who had been interested in baseball since his youth, bought into the New York Yankees and became their owner on December 31, 1914. He held this position until his death. In the 1920s and 1930s, his club dominated Major League Baseball . He was also instrumental in the construction of Yankee Stadium . Jacob Ruppert died on January 13, 1939 in New York City. He was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in July 2013 .

Trivia

Jacob Ruppert was the only person who ever lived on the small island of South Brother Island in the middle of New York City. The Ruppert Coast in Antarctica is named in his honor.
