Joseph C. Baldwin

Joseph Clark Baldwin (born January 11, 1897 in New York City , † October 27, 1957 ) was an American politician . Between 1941 and 1947 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Clark Baldwin attended private schools. He graduated in 1916 at the St. Paul's School in Concord ( New Hampshire ) and 1920 at Harvard University in Cambridge ( Massachusetts ). During the First World War he enlisted in the US Navy in 1917 , but was transferred to the US Army in 1918 . He fought overseas. As a private he served in the machine gun company in the 305th  Infantry Regiment . He received an officer’s license and commanded the first platoon in the machine gun company of the 39th Infantry Regiment. In addition, he was an officer in the Legion of Honor . Between 1922 and 1930 he worked as a political reporter for the New York Tribune and later was an associate editor for the North Westchester Times . He started a public relations company in 1930 . Between 1929 and 1934 he was a member of the Board of Aldermen of New York City. He sat in the New York Senate between 1934 and 1936 . In 1938 he took part in the New York Constituent Assembly as a delegate . Between 1937 and 1941 he was a member of the New York City Council . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .

Baldwin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in a by-election on March 11, 1941 in the 17th electoral district of New York to fill the vacancy created by the death of Kenneth F. Simpson . He was elected to the following two congresses . In 1946 he suffered a defeat when he ran for re-election and left Congress after January 3, 1947.

After his time at Congress, he worked as a representative for United Dye and Chemical Corp. and the William Law Co., Inc. He died in New York City on October 27, 1957 and was then buried in Woodlawn Cemetery .
