Arphaxed Loomis

Arphaxed Loomis (born April 9, 1798 in Winsted , Connecticut , † September 15, 1885 in Little Falls , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1837 and 1839 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Arphaxed Loomis was born in Winsted, Litchfield County just before the end of the 18th century . The family moved to New York in 1801 and settled on a farm in the town of Salisbury in Herkimer County . He attended community schools and the Fairfield Academy . Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in Albany in 1822 and began practicing at Sackets Harbor that year . He returned to Salisbury in 1825 and from there he moved to Little Falls that same year, where he continued to practice as a lawyer. Between 1828 and 1836 he worked as a guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Herkimer County. As a commissioner in 1834 he was responsible for investigating state prisons. Between 1835 and 1840 he was a district judge in Herkimer County.

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the 1836 congressional elections for the 25th Congress , Loomis was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Abijah Mann junior on March 4, 1837 . Since he on a run again in 1838 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1839 Congress of. As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Patents .

Loomis served in the New York State Assembly in 1841 and 1842 . In 1846 he took part in the New York Constituent Assembly . In 1847 he was a member of the commission which revised, shortened and simplified the procedural briefs and procedures for civil actions. He then sat again in the New York State Assembly in 1853 and 1854. As a delegate, he took part in the Democratic State Conventions in 1861 and 1863 . He died on September 15, 1885 in Little Falls and was then buried in Church Street Cemetery .
