Joel Turrill
Joel Turrill (born February 22, 1794 in Shoreham , Vermont , † December 28, 1859 in Oswego , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1833 and 1837 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Joel Turrill attended community schools and graduated from Middlebury College in 1816 . He studied law in Newburgh . Then he moved to Oswego. He was admitted to the bar in 1819 and then began practicing in Oswego. He served as a justice of the peace and between 1828 and 1833 as a county judge ( County Judge ). In 1831 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction.
In the 1832 congressional elections for the 23rd Congress , Turrill was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 17th constituency of New York , where he succeeded John W. Taylor on March 4, 1833 . He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1836 renounced, he left the after 3 March 1837 Congress of.
Between 1838 and 1840 he was a district attorney in Oswego County . He held the post of guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Oswego County in 1843 . Between 1845 and 1850 he was US consul in the Kingdom of Hawaii . He died on December 28, 1859 in Oswego and was then buried in Riverside Cemetery .
