Peter Joseph Dooling (born February 15, 1857 in New York City , † October 18, 1931 there ) was an American politician . Between 1913 and 1921 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Peter Joseph Dooling was born and raised in New York City about four years before the outbreak of the Civil War . During this time he attended public schools. Then he went into real estate business. Between 1887 and 1889 he worked as a court officer on the Court of General Sessions . He served on the New York City Board of Aldermen in 1891 and 1892 . In 1893 he became Deputy Clerk at the Court of Special Sessions - a position he held until 1895. He was Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Water Supply, Gas and Electricity between 1898 and 1901 . During this time he sat in the Aqueduct Commission in 1898 . He was a member of the New York Senate between 1903 and 1905 . He then worked as a clerk in the City and County of New York between 1906 and 1909 .

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the 1912 congressional elections for the 63rd Congress , Dooling was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Francis Burton Harrison on March 4, 1913 . He was re-elected twice in a row. In 1918 he ran in the 15th constituency of New York for the 66th Congress . After a successful election, he succeeded Thomas Francis Smith on March 4, 1919 . In 1920 he was defeated in his re-election bid and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1921 Congress of. As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Expenditures in the War Department ( 65th Congress ).

He was New York County Sheriff in 1924 and Commissioner in the Department of Purchases of New York City in 1926 . Then he went back to real estate business. He died on October 18, 1931 in New York City and was then buried in Calvary Cemetery .
