David P. Brewster
David Payne Brewster (born June 15, 1801 in Cairo , New York , † February 20, 1876 in Oswego , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1839 and 1843 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
David Payne Brewster was born in Cairo, Greene County , in the early 19th century . He attended community schools and graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1823 . Then he moved to New York City . He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1825 and then began practicing in Oswego. He held the post of trustee in the Village of Oswego in 1828, 1836 and 1845 . Between 1829 and 1833 he went to the position as a prosecuting attorney in Oswego County . Between 1832 and 1834 he was treasurer in the Village of Oswego and in 1837 President there. In 1833 he became a judge on the Court of Common Pleas - a position he held until 1841. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .
In the congressional elections of 1838 for the 26th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 17th electoral district of New York , where on March 4, 1839 he succeeded Henry A. Foster and Abraham P. Grant who had previously represented the district in the US House of Representatives. After a successful re-election in 1840 , he retired from after March 3, 1843 Congress of.
On July 21, 1845 he was appointed postmaster in Oswego. He held the post until the appointment of his successor on January 10, 1849. He then went back to his work as a lawyer, but was also active in agriculture. He sat on the Excise Board Commission and was President there between 1870 and 1873. He died on February 20, 1876 in Oswego and was then buried in Riverside Cemetery .
