Thomas Jefferson Van Alstyne (born July 25, 1827 in Richmondville , New York , † October 26, 1903 in Albany , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Jefferson Van Alstyne attended community schools, Moravia Academy and Hartwick Seminary . In 1848 he graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton . He studied law in Albany. He was admitted to the bar in 1849 and then began practicing in that city. During the Civil War he served as a judge advocate with the rank of major . Between 1871 and 1882 he was a judge in Albany County . Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the 1882 congressional elections for the 48th Congress , Van Alstyne was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Michael N. Nolan on March 4, 1883 . In 1884 he was defeated in his re-election bid and was eliminated from the after March 3, 1885 Congress of.

After his time at Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer. Between 1898 and 1900 he was the successor to John Boyd Thacher mayor of Albany . He died there on October 26, 1903 and was then buried in the Albany Rural Cemetery .
