Steffen Kuchenreuther

Steffen Kuchenreuther (born August 29, 1947 in Erlangen ; † January 20, 2013 in Munich ) was a German cinema operator and film producer . From 1997 to 2012 he was President of the Central Organization of the Film Industry (SPIO) and 18 times organizer of the German Film Ball in Munich.

Life

Steffen Kuchenreuthers parents were cinema operators. So he came into contact with the industry at an early stage. He studied business administration at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and took over the Leopold Cinema in Schwabing together with his brother Thomas in 1965 . The Savoy in Pasing was added in 1966, followed by the ABC in Herzogstrasse a year later . Especially at the ABC-Kino, one of the oldest cinemas in Munich, the Kuchenreuthers relied on film art instead of mainstream. As a member of the European film theater network “ Europa Cinemas ”, the cinema mainly shows European cinematography in its program. In 1971 the Eldorado on Sonnenstrasse and the Münchner Freiheit cinema were taken over.

Also together with his brother, he produced the Ingeborg Bachmann film adaptation of Malina (1991) and Herbert Achternbusch's films Ab nach Tibet! (1994) and Hades (1995). Steffen and Thomas Kuchenreuther received the Bavarian Film Prize for Malina .

Steffen Kuchenreuther was a member of the supervisory board of the Munich Film Festival and a member of the jury for the Bavarian Film Prize. The city of Munich honored him in 2011 with the award Munich shines in gold. He was an honorary member of the Presidium of the Central Organization of the Film Industry (SPIO) and was honored in 2012 with the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class and the Herbert Strate Prize . In addition, he was involved as Vice President of the European Cinema Association, President of the Main Association of German Film Theaters and member of the board of the Bavarian Film Theaters' Association.

Kuchenreuther died one day after the 40th German Film Ball, at which he could no longer participate in lung cancer . He left behind his wife Soo Leng Kuchenreuter and his son Jeremy Wilson.
