Main Association of German Film Theaters

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hauptverband Deutscher Filmtheater eV (HDF) is an umbrella organization and lobby group for cinemas in Germany.

It was founded in 1950 in Wiesbaden under the name Zentralverband der Deutschen Filmtheater ( Central Association of German Film Theaters ). The current name of the organization, which in 2008 had around 650 members, is HDF KINO eV

The association tends to represent the larger, mainstream-oriented cinemas. In addition, the working group Kino - Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater (German Film Art Theaters' Guild) represents the commercial cinemas, which are more oriented towards the art house segment . The municipal or non-commercial cinemas are mostly organized in the Federal Association of Municipal Film Work.

The official organ of the HDF Kino is the weekly specialist magazine Filmecho / Filmwoche .

The chairman of the board is Christine Berg, who succeeded Thomas Negele on August 1, 2019. Negele led the association for 14 years and was elected honorary chairman in 2019.

Future Cinema Marketing GmbH

The association holds shares in a subsidiary called Zukunft Kino Marketing GmbH (ZKM) in which the Association of Film Distributors and the Multiplex Association Cineropa eV are also involved.

The focus of activity of the subsidiary is the fight against so-called " pirated copies ".

According to the company, the target group is that of the end consumer . Campaigns, events, film and video productions, media work , posters, print materials, appearances in print, radio and TV, various speakers and a website are used as communication tools.

Campaigns included:

  • "Knast on Tour" (2004-2006)
  • "Pirates cannot hide" (2006)
  • " Pirates are criminals ", since 2005: Respect Copyrights

In the campaigns, the impression is repeatedly given that copying films generally entails considerable (freedom) penalties. It is also given the false impression that illegal copies are punishable as robbery or a crime , although they are an offense . Most communication measures fail to provide adequate information.
