Pirates are criminals

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The " Pirate copiers are criminals ", also known as the " Hart aber Gerecht " campaign, was a PR campaign by Zukunft Kino Marketing GmbH , a subsidiary of the German Film Theaters' Association , the Cineropa Multiplex Association and the Film Distributors Association .

In 2005 the project was expanded with the educational campaign Respect Copyrights (spelling: RESPE © T COPYRIGHTS ) and later completely replaced. This aims to stimulate pupils to discuss copyright law and the value of intellectual property .

Goal setting

The public relations campaign "Pirate copiers are criminals" was launched in November 2003 in order to sharpen the lack of awareness of wrongdoing on the part of end consumers, who are increasingly buying illegal films. According to a study by the Film Funding Agency from 2003, the so-called Brenner Study 2 , 30 million feature films were burned on blank CDs and DVDs in that year.

The campaign worked with TV, cinema and internet spots as well as print motifs. The campaign was also frequently referred to on DVDs. The aim of the parts of the campaign was to increase the population's awareness of breaking the law when creating, distributing and using illegal copies. People should be deterred from becoming so-called “ pirates ” themselves .

The PR campaign was funded by the Filmförderungsanstalt (FFA).

Other Projects

Zukunft Kino Marketing GmbH is also responsible for the Respect Copyrights project. This initiative deals with the importance of intellectual property for the creative industries, but also from a social perspective. She explains the background and the increasingly changing legal situation on copyright. In particular, Respect Copyrights wants to promote the discourse on copyright in the educational context. For this purpose, teaching materials are available for download on the website respectcopyrights.de.

Methodically, the initiative focuses on forming opinions in dilemma situations. Scenarios are set up in which there is no clear position or behavioral specification, but an individual attitude should be developed and justified individually with arguments.

Since the Respect Copyrights initiative never addressed the broader population due to its educational orientation and hardly polarized it, it is much less well known than the PR campaign “Pirates are criminals”.

criticism

The term pirated copy , which has been used for decades, is controversial, as the addressed issue does not meet the criteria of “robbery” from a legal point of view . The slogan “Pirate copiers are criminals” was criticized because it did not differentiate between legal copying of one's own media for personal use and illegal copying by circumventing copy protection or for commercial reasons. From a legal point of view, black copying is not a crime , but an offense .
