Orlando Kellogg (born June 18, 1809 in Elizabethtown , New York , † August 24, 1865 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . He represented New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1847 and 1849 and between 1863 and 1865 .

Career

Orlando Kellogg was born and raised in Elizabethtown, Essex County , about three years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He pursued an academic career. Kellogg did an apprenticeship as a carpenter at an early age and then pursued the trade until 1838. During this time he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1838 and then began practicing in Elizabethtown. Between 1840 and 1844 he was guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Essex County.

Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party . In the congressional election of 1846 for the 30th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Erastus D. Culver on March 4, 1847 . Since he on a run again in 1848 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1849 Congress of.

After his time in Congress, he went back to his practice as a lawyer in Elizabethtown. He joined the Republican Party . As a delegate, he took part in the Republican National Convention in Chicago in 1860 .

In the congressional elections of 1862 for the 38th Congress he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 16th electoral district of New York, where he succeeded William A. Wheeler on March 4, 1863 . He was re-elected but died during his tenure on August 24, 1865 in Elizabethtown. During the Civil War , he helped organize and finance the 118th  regiment of New York Volunteers . As a result, he became known as the "Father of the Regiment" . His body was buried in Riverside Cemetery . A memorial was erected in the Congressional Cemetery in Washington DC in memory of Kellogg .
