Adriano D. Espaillat (born September 27, 1954 in Santiago de los Caballeros , Dominican Republic ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2017, he has represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Adriano Espaillat is the great-grandson of Ulises Francisco Espaillat (1823-1878), who was President of the Dominican Republic in 1876. He came to the United States early on and still lives in Manhattan today . In 1974 he graduated from Bishop Dubois High School . He then studied political science at Queens College . He was also enrolled at Rutgers University . Between 1980 and 1988 he worked as a court coordinator and dispute arbitrator for the Manhattan Justice Department. From 1992 to 1994 he was a director at the Washington Heights Victim Services Community Office , which advises families of crime victims.

Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In this party he held or holds some local offices. Between 1996 and 2010 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . He then moved to the State Senate , to which he had been a member since January 1, 2011 as the successor to Eric Schneiderman . In 2012 and 2014 he ran unsuccessfully in the primary elections of his party for nomination as a candidate for the congressional elections. He was subject to Charles B. Rangel . In the 2016 congressional election , Espaillat was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th constituency of New York , where he succeeded Charles Rangel on January 3, 2017, who ceased to serve in 2016 after 46 years had run.
