Lemuel Stetson

Lemuel Stetson (born March 13, 1804 in Champlain , New York , † May 17, 1868 in Plattsburgh , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1843 and 1845 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lemuel Stetson was born and raised in Champlain, Clinton County , about eight years before the outbreak of the British-American War . During this time he attended public schools and the Plattsburg Academy . He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1824 and then began practicing in Keeseville , Essex County . He served in the New York State Assembly in 1835, 1836, and 1842 . Between 1838 and 1843 he was a district attorney in Clinton County. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1842 for the 28th Congress he was elected in the 15th electoral district of New York to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John Sanford on March 4, 1843 . He retired from the after March 3, 1845 Congress of. As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on District of Columbia .

After his time in Congress, he took part in the New York Constituent Assembly in 1846 . He sat in the New York State Assembly that same year. Then he moved to Plattsburgh in 1847. Between 1847 and 1851 he was a judge in Clinton County. In 1860 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore . Then he went back to his activity as a lawyer. He died on May 17, 1868 in Plattsburgh and was then buried in Riverside Cemetery .
