Vincent Mathews

Vincent Mathews (born June 29, 1766 in Newburgh , Province of New York , † August 23, 1846 in Rochester , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1809 and 1811 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Vincent Mathews was born and raised in Matthew's Field near Newburgh in Orange County during the British colonial era . He pursued an academic career. During this time he visited the Noah Webster's School in Goshen and the Academy in Hackensack ( New Jersey ). He studied law in New York City . He was admitted to the bar in 1790 and then began to practice in Elmira . He sat in the New York State Assembly in 1794 and in the New York Senate in 1796, 1797, and 1809 . He served as Bounty Land Claims Commissioner in 1798. He served as a cavalry commander and brigadier general in the New York National Guard .

Politically he belonged to the Federalist Party . In the congressional elections of 1808 for the 11th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th constituency of New York , where he succeeded John Russell on March 4, 1809 . Between 1813 and 1815 he was a district attorney in the seventh district of New York. He moved to Bath and from there to Rochester in 1821. In 1826 he was back in the New York State Assembly. He was then a district attorney in Monroe County . He then went to Rochester to work as a lawyer. He died there on August 23, 1846 and was then buried in Mount Hope Cemetery .
